You won’t believe how the K-pop landscape is shifting

The landscape of K-pop is undergoing some significant changes that are threatening the status quo.

Historically, many successful K-pop idols emerged from the four main powerhouse entertainment companies: SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, HYBE, or YG Entertainment. Aspiring singers often aimed to become trainees under these industry giants, believing it offered a better shot at success.

However, a notable shift has occurred this year, with the top-selling K-pop girl groups in 2024 hailing from smaller to mid-sized companies. In fact, the two best-selling idol groups didn't originate from the usual Big Four agencies.

According to the latest data, (G)I-DLE claimed the top spot, selling the most album copies among girl groups in 2024 with their album 2, released on January 29, 2024.

Following closely behind is IVE with their album IVE SWITCH, released on April 29. (G)I-DLE is under Cube Entertainment while IVE belongs to Starship Entertainment.

The remaining spots on the list are occupied by aespa, TWICE, LE SSERAFIM, NewJeans, NMIXX, BABYMONSTER, ILLIT, and ITZY, all representing the Big 4 companies in South Korea. This is a fascinating trend – one that promises fresh blood and innovation in the coming years as new talent and new corporate visionaries vie for top spots in the market.
