Daily Non-K-pop Spotlight: “Romantic Sunday” by Car, the garden

Initially treating music as a mere hobby, singer-songwriter Car, the garden (카더가든) pivoted from his day job to embrace a full-time music career—a move that has undoubtedly enriched the global indie music landscape. Debuting in 2013 as Mayson the Soul, he quickly outgrew the soul genre, rebranding under the guidance of his friend Oh Hyuk (of Hyukoh fame) to reflect his own name, Cha Jung-won, in English. This transformation marked a pivotal moment, propelling him into a breakthrough success.

One of his most successful tracks is the dreamy, beachy, retro rock song “Romantic Sunday.” It feels like a chipper 70s American TV tune, with ample “sha la las” and a cute premise. The strings are retro-cinematic, and the heartbeat kick drum keeps everything locked in a classic rock ‘n roll lilt as acoustic and clean guitars wash over the listener.

It’s like his music was made for cinema. Car, the garden’s soulful voice has graced many K-drama soundtracks, enriching series like Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, where his track “Romantic Sunday” captivated audiences.
