Although 2nd-gen K-pop groups generally fizzle out, one group has maintained momentum over almost two decades of activity. Super Junior’s longevity is due to several factors including paving the way for other K-pop groups’ success, varying their style throughout the years, and their beautiful vocal harmonization and unison.
Super Junior, nicknamed SJ or SuJu, debuted on November 6, 2005. Most members were chosen because of their prior experience as actors, MCs, models, or radio hosts. The group eventually formed 6 sub-units, with different arrangements of the group’s 13 members: Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun, Han Geng, Kibum, and Kangin. Although the group’s makeup has shifted over the years, Super Junior continues to be “Ever Lasting Friends” with their fandom, E.L.F.
Super Junior’s success over the past two decades is due to several reasons. They’re pioneers in many areas, including being the first K-pop group to form sub-units, the first to include a foreign member, and among the first K-pop groups to have huge success in Latin America. But most of all, SuJu has contributed significantly to the Hallyu Wave (the rise of South Korea’s pop culture popularity), solidifying the future success of other K-pop groups.
Additionally, Super Junior isn’t afraid to experiment with incredible variety in music genres. The group began with bubblegum pop in their debut studio album, Twins, shifted to alternative rock, and explored contemporary R&B, pop, neo-soul, and Eurohouse. A highlight is "Sorry Sorry Answer,” showcasing their take on R&B and mellow vibes, soft rapping, beautiful harmonization, and classy cinematography and costumes.
Super Junior is also known for their amazing vocal harmonization. Each member has a different vocal range and the group often incorporates belting into their songs. SuJu’s cover of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” perfectly showcases their talent in the harmony and unison fields.
