Red Velvet: Something for Everyone

In the world of K-pop—a music genre mainly led by visuals and aesthetics— a group knowing how to navigate concepts is imperative. Some groups debut with one concept and then switch to another, some iterate the same one again and again, and some have no concept at all, experimenting during each comeback. Enter Red Velvet, who seems to have mastered the art of versatility. The group has earned the title of “Concept Queens” within the K-pop community, due to their ability to switch between their double concept of “Red” and “Velvet.” Their prosperity stems from their ability to experiment, beautiful vocals, and memorable hits.

Red Velvet debuted on August 1, 2014, under SM Entertainment, with their first single "Happiness.” The group began with four members—Irene, Seulgi, Joy, and Wendy—adding Yeri in 2015 to become the quintet it is today. Irene stepped in as leader of the group, also working as an ambassador for Miu Miu and Prada. Seulgi has an impressive vocal range and dance skills. Joy is a jack of all trades, with her skills spanning music, acting, and work as a brand ambassador for companies like Calvin Klein. Wendy has a dynamic stage presence. Yeri has excellent acting, vocal, and rap skills. Each member’s unique background prepared Red Velvet for a future of flourishing.

Red Velvet’s excellence at versatility is literally in their name. The girl group debuted with the unique dual concept of “Red” and “Velvet,” each concept having a different flavor of music that the group bounces between. Their “Red” side is more bright and cheery with upbeat catchy pop songs like “Ice Cream Cake” and “Power Up.” On the other side of the coin is the “Velvet” concept, which has a darker, more soulful, and mature energy to it. “Velvet” songs include “Be Natural” and “Psycho.” Having this duality lets Red Velvet experiment with a range of sounds and themes.

Red Velvet’s all-around success is also largely due to their rich vocal blend. Each member contributes significantly to the group's harmonies. Seulgi is the lead vocalist and has a crisp and emotive voice, which complements Wendy, the main vocalist, who has an amazing ability to lighten or darken her voice depending on the type of song being sung.

Red Velvet’s ability to create memorable hits is unquestionable. “Red Flavor” from their “Red” concept is characterized by bright colors and whimsical energy, perfectly showing the group’s more childish and upbeat side.

Red Velvet’s track "Psycho" is quite the opposite, but still so well done, with a smooth, darker sound and more mature and sophisticated concept, playing into the sultry mysterious side of the group.

Due to Red Velvet's experimental approach to a double concept, exceptional vocals, and infectious music, the group has become known for their beautiful approach to diversity in their music, ensuring that there is something for every listener in their discography.
