Astro: A Steady Climb

Idol groups often rely on the popularity of their label and appearance on survival programs to gain popularity, but ASTRO didn’t. Despite lacking this exposure, ASTRO had a gradual but consistent rise in popularity. The boy group’s success is largely due to their great intertextual relationships, smooth comeback shifts, and a wide range of skills and roles in the group.

ASTRO debuted in 2016 under Fantagio, which was, up until that point, primarily recognized as an acting agency. The boy group originally had six members: MJ, Jinjin, Cha Eun-woo, Yoon San-ha, Rocky, and Moonbin. Rocky left in 2023, and Moonbin tragically passed away later that year, much to the devastation of the boy group and the group’s fandom, AROHA. The name AROHA is a mashup of “ASTRO,” “hearts,” and “all their fans,” symbolizing the bond between fans and the group.

ASTRO’s slow climb in recognition is largely attributed to their amazing intertextual relationships. Cha Eun-woo has become a household name in South Korea through his work in many popular drama series. His lead role in “True Beauty” from 2020–2021 significantly impact the group’s popularity, causing a dramatic increase in sales.

Although ASTRO has never had a viral song, ASTRO has consistently released comebacks with success. In the beginning, the group had more of a youthful “teen candy” image, which has shifted to a more mature sophisticated concept. This shift was smooth and well-received by fans. “All Night,” released in 2019, is a great example of the group’s darker theme.

ASTRO members have a diverse skill set that allows them to pull off a concept shift. Between Cha Eun-woo’s looks, Jinjin’s handling of logistics, and Rocky’s great dance skills, ASTRO has never been dependent on one member. The group’s harmony is evident in songs such as “Crazy Sexy Cool,” the group’s most popular song to date.

Although ASTRO's slow climb through the idol ranks may be unconventional in today's fast-paced industry, it’s a traditional path and a good one. Despite dealing with financial issues, multiple CEO changes, and members leaving and passing away, ASTRO has remained strong in the industry. And they’ll continue to climb, no matter how slow.
