“SEULGI has long proved herself as an intoxicating and masterful performer” – NME
Red Velvet’s SEULGI underlines her range as a solo star with her second EP, “Accidentally On Purpose”, out now via SM Entertainment. Listen here.
Hailing from one of the planet’s most popular and critically-lauded K-pop girl groups of the past decade, SEULGI has solidified her status as a charismatic performer and the arrival of this new body of work further highlights her potential.
The six-track EP is led by the confident, pop-dance single ‘Baby, Not Baby’. Unfurling over an urgent funk bassline and electric guitars, the lyrics hear SEULGI assert her power by reminding her lover that she is more than just ‘your baby’. The track is produced by GRAMMY-nominated producer Erick Serna, who has worked on Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” album, and lyrics were penned by renowned K-pop hitmaker KENZIE.
The single sets the tone for “Accidentally On Purpose”, which is all about accepting contradictions in life and love. The EP’s paradox takes root with ‘Better Dayz’, an alt-pop track that suggests having hope can potentially be more despairing – and tempts listeners through dreamy vocals to forget reality and escape into a fantasy of better days. ‘Rollin’ (With My Homies)’, a pop-fuelled R&B song, follows like a balm, with an uplifting reminder that everything will be okay, no matter what choices we make in life.
‘Whatever’ is a groovy R&B mid-tempo that highlights SEULGI’s warmth, with her crystalline vocal tones wrapping around encouraging lyrics about walking your own path at your own pace. The dream-like quality continues with ‘Praying’, an atmospheric R&B number with a spacious bass sound expressing love and gratitude for those who lift her up during difficult times. The EP is rounded out by ‘Weakness’, the final contradiction – a sentimental love song contrasted with a cheerful guitar and bass melody. The lyrics, co-written by the singer, reflect on the sweetness of becoming endlessly clumsy and lovesick in front of someone you’ve fallen for.

“Accidentally On Purpose” marks SEULGI’s first solo release in nearly two and a half years, since her highly-rated debut solo EP: “28 Reasons”. Called ‘pure brilliance’ by NME, it achieved the highest first-week sales for any of SM Entertainment’s female solo artists and became the longest charting #1 album by a solo female K-pop artist on the Worldwide iTunes Album Chart.
SEULGI – along with her Red Velvet members IRENE and JOY – is set to return to the UK to perform at SMTOWN Live in London at Allianz Twickenham Stadium on 28 June. The epic stadium concert, in celebration of SM Entertainment’s 30th anniversary, also features over a dozen other K-pop stars including NCT 127, NCT DREAM, aespa, RIIZE and more. Tickets are now on sale at Ticketmaster, AXS and Konne Ticket.
