Hearts2Hearts Plays By Their Own Rules with Sleek Confidence on “RUDE!”

It’s no exaggeration that K-pop’s fifth-generation is both reviving long-forgotten sounds and introducing their own energy into the industry. Hearts2Hearts (JIWOO, CARMEN, YUHA, STELLA, JUUN, A-NA, IAN, and YE-ON), the newest group under SM Entertainment and the first girl group to debut under the company since aespa in 2020, is one of these groups leading the charge into a brighter era of K-pop.

2025 was a marathon year for Hearts2Hearts. Not only did they debut with “The Chase” in February, but they went on to release two more singles as well as their first mini-album within just five months. On 20 February 2026, they returned with their first release of the year: the digital single “RUDE!”.

On this single, each member shows off their personalities and brings their own artistic flair into the line deliveries. When JUUN struts onto the beat with “Yeah, I walked right in / In a flash everybody's my friend,” listeners are eased into the track with her quiet confidence. The same can be said for IAN’s delivery of “Don't side-eye me, this ain't no race,” dragging out the last word just enough to make it land with a gentle punch.

Each lyric grows more honest and almost targeted until STELLA’s post-bridge interlude lifts the track up to a level that guarantees its memorability in year-end lists months down the road. The Korean-Canadian member addresses the group and listeners when she recalls: “You know what he said to me? (What?) / He was like, ‘You are so rude’ / And I was like, ‘Boy, does it look like I could care?’ / ‘I couldn't even care less’” – a light-hearted moment that calls to mind Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” bridge spoken in a similar disbelieving tone. This delivery, along with the group’s laughter that fades into the final chorus, brings the core meaning of “RUDE!” to the surface: outside forces may try to change them, but they’ve already reached complete fulfillment with themselves.

Up until this point, Hearts2Hearts’ title tracks have largely revolved around the fluttery feelings of first love and the deeper layers that come with it. Here, they’ve put those subjects in their back pocket and graduated to what may be their first moment of breaking the fourth wall. The criticisms they reference in “RUDE!” echo the language of immature peers and online commentary alike. Lines like “Jealous eyes everywhere” nod to the scrutiny that often surrounds idols, while “Call me immature but if it’s fun that’s okay” flips that label on its head, reclaiming it with defiance rather than defensiveness.

The pre-chorus is where their confidence outweighs the scrutiny. By brightly stating “No matter what they say can't change me / I'm good just the way I am / I shine the brightest when I'm myself,” Hearts2Hearts is putting their foot down. With the group’s oldest member born in 2006 and the group debuting just over a year ago, the surety that resides in this one single is all the more impressive – and proof that both their individual and collective talents are what make their music so fresh.

What’s most striking is how “RUDE!” unmistakably sounds like a Hearts2Hearts song – a testament to the fact that a group barely a year into their career has already begun carving out a recognisable sonic identity. It carries the playful lyricism of “STYLE,” the high-energy pulse of “FOCUS,” and the youthful tone of “Pretty Please,” albeit with sharper edges and noticeably less naivety. They may still be new to the industry, but their sound already feels defined rather than provisional.

Groups from all corners of K-pop have the ability to make their music recognizable within a few seconds, but achieving a specifically distinct sound is where SM Entertainment truly shines. Just like Red Velvet’s sweet yet eerie sound, NCT 127’s cacophonous instrumentals, and aespa’s futuristic style, Hearts2Hearts’ unified vocals and girlish spin on common feelings within their lyrics are beginning to crystallise a distinct sonic identity. Not only is it easy to note when one of their songs is playing, but each one continues to feel more fresh than the last.

As their first release of the year, “RUDE!” positions Hearts2Hearts within what has already been a busy opening stretch for K-pop, but with a clearer sense of conviction. Each member leans into a composed, self-assured tone, brushing aside outside commentary without sounding rattled by it. Rather than veer into entirely new territory, they build on the foundation laid with “The Chase” and “Butterflies,” refining a sound that strengthens their place within K-pop’s evolving fifth generation.
